Dan Weyerhaeuser, Senior Pastor
Here we go! Begin by getting still for a few minutes before the Lord. That can be hard to do. Take a deep breath, then another.
Remember that you are in the presence of the God of the Universe, whose attention is directed towards you… and He’s smiling! Through Christ, He is your Father, and He’s been waiting to be with you. Don’t talk… just sit in His presence for a few minutes. Prayer is more a disposition than it is just words. It is knowing you are in the presence of God and being attentive to Him.
After a few minutes there, pray:
please show me Yourself and Your greatness
please renew my love for You
please renew my joy in Your Word
please speak to me now
please bring one of these truths in your Word to my mind all day so that I meditate/chew/reflect on in through the day.
We will spend our entire week in the wonderful chapter of Isaiah 40. These words were written to a generation of God’s people in a season of discipline from God. Babylon had overrun Judah with their army, and begun to deport people back to Babylon where they would be slaves. As they went, the prophet shared 26 chapters of encouragement, beginning with this one.
Read Isaiah 40:1-11 three times.
What characteristics of the Lord are revealed in these verses? (example: 1) Verse 1 Comforting: God wants His people to find comfort in Him, even in hard times, 2) v. 3-4 Rescuing: one day He will come to get His people and nothing will stand in His way, 3) v. 8 Eternal and unchanging) Take your time!
Now, next to each attribute of the Lord you have written, go back and write down how each one makes a difference in your life (example: 1) If God is comforting (v. 1), He wants ME to know His comfort. 2) If God is a Rescuer (v. 3-4), nothing can stop Him from doing good in my life. 3) If God’s Word is eternal and unchanging, I can trust His promise is sure.) Again, take your time!
Ask the Lord to bring to mind areas that you need to confess. Do so.
Take each of the benefits you have just captured, and pray them for your family, friends, and church. Ask God to make these things known in their lives.
Who are two people you know who don’t know Him? Pray for them that God would open their hearts.
What things are before you today that you need the Lord’s help with? Ask His leading and help that in each of these things, He would be honored!
When will you remember these attributes today?
