Week 8, Day 4: Adopting

by Dan Weyerhaeuser, Senior Pastor

I hope you have been as encouraged working through these texts as I have been. The Bible is a vast banquet table filled with treasures for us. Jesus has things about Himself He wants to show you today as well.

Take a few minutes getting your attention focused entirely upon Him! Ask His blessing on your visit.

The first verses of Ephesians are as rich as any place in the scriptures. We will look at God’s saving work of us, and where adoption fits into this.

Read Eph 1:3-4, three times out loud.

Paul basically explodes in praise to God for Who He is and what He has done. What has He done?

What does the word “every” mean? What does it mean that in Jesus, God, has given us every blessing?

How do you respond to Him for giving you every blessing He has to give?

Read Eph 1:5-6, three times out loud.

What did God’s love lead Him to do?

It was God’s plan from before time that His children would be adopted as sons through Jesus. Think about our union to Christ in our adoption. What is the relationship that Jesus has with the Father?

When we come to the Father “through” Jesus, we enter into the same relationship Jesus has with Him. That is why we are “adopted as sons through Jesus Christ.” If the Father were with you right now, what would you say to Him? Because He is, go ahead and say it.

In v. 6, how does God’s offering us this salvation lead us to praise Him?

Read Eph 1:7-10, three times out loud.

In these verses, the work of the “Beloved” (v. 6) is now explained. These verses describe what it cost Jesus so that we could be adopted as children of God. What do we know about Christ’s cross from these verses?

If Jesus were with you right now, what would you say to Him? He is… so say it!

God initiated having you as His child. How will it effect your day if you can keep this in mind?

As you conclude: What is one truth about God from these texts you can take through your day? How can you remember it?

Can you think of two people you will see today who don’t yet know the adopting love of Christ? Take a moment and pray for both of them, that God’s Spirit would give them new birth. Then watch for how He brings you two together!

Go spend your day with the God Who adopts!
